@ashtrey05 Cops around here drive mostly custom-built VW Transporter vans...
By: eldom20. on 16 Jul 10, 03:24:31
@kriznaft The Chevy Impala police car is FWD. the only RWD are the Charger and the Crown Victoria.

@Konformation07 Very true, the po-po will just understeer and plow into a mailbox and us RWD drivers can make our getaway :-)

@JoshChadwick I guess that is British for "your most favorite song"

@ScubaSteveM45 that's good because more RWD cars can get away now
By: iknowcarsbetterthanu. on 27 Jun 10, 17:44:35
@rforracing yeah i think there was a guy who pointed that out to me 3 months ago if you look above. plus i already knew that. im implying that rwd is better on the road than fwd and awd is better than fwd off the road.
By: rforracing. on 27 Jun 10, 16:16:32
@iknowcarsbetterthanu FWD is better in snow and sand than RWD douche.

Skyline GTR attesa e-ts FTW...... the Nissan Skyline GT-R is predominately a rear wheel drive (RWD) car. All power, be it a V-Spec model or not, is transferred to the rear wheels. but when it need to, it behaves like an AWD through electronic torque management the pro version can even adjust each individual wheel

@Marshmallowrex take your traction and stability control off. if you can even find it.

RWD is best IMO."but AWD is better in the winter." I live where it snows about every 100 years(south texas), and I don't plan on moving to a cold climate anytime soon, so who gives a f*ck."RWD is tough to handle." A good traction control system is all you need to keep you from crashing."try playing in the mud/offroading with RWD." Uhhh no thanks I like to keep my car clean and un-broken. Also, RWD is less expensive, more fuel efficient, and lighter than AWD. FWD is good for commuting only.

how come the bmw only gets traction control? this test is bull
By: mati94656. on 20 May 10, 15:05:27
rwd=best in a winter

Hey everybody, you know why most cars sold nowadays are FF layout? IT'S CHEAPER! Auto makers don't want to spend a dime more then they absolutely have to to make another car somebody out there is going to buy, handling be damned. Problem is some markets need a sturdy, no-nonsense FR car, like most police departments and taxi cab companies. Yet Ford still wants to ice the Crown Victoria platform and push the cops of the future into a police spec FF Taurus.
By: ScubaSteveM45. on 16 May 10, 23:45:08
@LMF5000 for most FF layout cars you are correct Mini included, but there are others like certain old Audis that are FF style but have the engine mounted longitudinally (ie front to back) just like a FR layout car. From what I have seen though with most FF cars is that although it does make a shorter hood (or bonnet to you) , the front overhang from the front wheels to the front end of the car is dramatically extended, resulting in a longer nose and making front-end parking a dicey affair.
By: ScubaSteveM45. on 16 May 10, 23:38:58
@LMF5000 For the most part it does effectively become a RWD car, but in the event you lose traction with Infinitis equipped with this it does divert torque to the front so that grip is maintained.
By: LMF5000. on 16 May 10, 23:29:38
@ScubaSteveM45 I thought it was because having a transversely mounted engine with the differential underneath it it saves the space and weight required for the driveshaft that you'd need to power the rear wheels, also allows a shorter bonnet etc.? Or am I confusing that with the configuration pioneered by the original mini minor?
By: LMF5000. on 16 May 10, 23:27:12
@ScubaSteveM45 Doesn't a 100% rearward AWD bias make it a rear wheel drive car?
By: ponczak. on 06 May 10, 20:02:45
RWD UBER ALLES
By: slobowitz. on 05 May 10, 21:06:44
Why onb earth would anyone even try to apply power when doing evasive maneuvers like the one in this clip? I just don't get it, please explain. I mean 4wd, should be good for powering out of corners/bends, but that's basically it. You have weight distribution as an important factor for handling, but has little to do with R/F/4 WD. On the racetrack I love the Porsche 911 Turbo 4x4, just point and shoot. :) Fab car. Easy to drive for a noob like myself.

@cerwinvegafan FWD's most early booster were the Japanese auto makers, they wanted to expand their sales base to Japanese women, a great deal of which still hadn't driven even well into the 1960's, as cars of that day still had a reputation of being unruly and phyiscally demanding to correct in the era before power steering and power brakes. FWD was their roundabout way to eliminate many women's concerns about cars being too scary to drive, with the built in tendency to understeer FWD was a hit.
By: ScubaSteveM45. on 03 May 10, 00:49:32
@rock3tcat they will never eradicate torque steer. Of all the RWD cars I have driven all could take off quick in a straight line without that zig-zag torque steer effect.
By: ScubaSteveM45. on 03 May 10, 00:47:33
All this video showed me is that AWD is just FWD moderated with some RWD. Too bad most AWD systems are biased frontwards save for Inifiniti's 100% rearward AWD bias
